This biography, a monumental undertaking running to 900 pages, is an achievement in itself. That it is immensely readable is much to the credit of the author and his research. Rewarding the reader with new perceptions of Napoleon Buonaparte, these new perceptions challenge much of the image that we have come to accept,Living in France as I do, in the country that he largely created and which still bears witness to his remarkable energy and foresight, this book is of special interest to me. The story delves back to his birth in Corsica into minor local nobility, schooling and military training in France. An avid reader of classical history, he carefully studied Caeser, Alexander the Great, Hannibal and other titans of history, beginning to shape his thinking of himself and his future. Graduating from the Ecole Militaire he gained a commission as an artillery officer; during this time he wrote and published romantic and political short stories and essays, his political statements often curiously timed and seemingly at odds with his situation at the times, criticised the Crown, the Revolution and France itself.
His ejection of the British forces from Toulon accelerated his promotion through the ranks, to gain his generalship at the age of 24. During the Revolution, Napoleon skilfully and with not a little luck, steered himself through the challenges facing the bourgeoisie at that time. Charged with clearing the streets of Paris with the threatening mob, he famously defused the situation by employing cannon loaded with grapeshot to break the riots.
